Work started at Cancer Research UK in February 2010 to utilise the new functionality in the 2010 release to provide powerful business intelligence for the project team. The Visio 2010 piece of work has been designed to pull data from Project Server, through a CPS developed web service to create a variety of timeline reports. The development has also extensively utilised the Visio web capabilities in SharePoint 2010 to extend Cancer Research UK ‘s dashboard functionality and the increased flexibility will enable the team to present relevant information to the right users in an extremely clear format.
Gary Smith, Head of IS PMO, Cancer Research UK explains;
‘The integration of Visio 2010 with Project Server 2010 should significantly improve the dashboard and reporting functionality available to the Cancer Research UK Project Team. The simplified and intuitive interface will mean we can produce professional - looking reports using live data. We will also be able to share the data in real-time which will considerably improve collaboration and efficiency within the team.’
Cancer Research UK worked with CPS on the initial 2010 Project Server proof of concept in quarter 4 of 2009 using the public beta software. One of the key reasons for the 2010 installation was the ability to take a phased approach. This meant there was minimal impact on the organisation while the project team still benefitted from the excellent capabilities the new product introduced.
Christopher Pond, Managing Consultant at CPS comments:
‘CPS has worked extensively with Microsoft during the development of the 2010 product group and we have been really impressed with the quality of the new release. The introduction of the Team Planner and ‘Excel-like’ interface has simplified the user experience, allowing clients to get up and running much quicker. This improvement has made Project Server 2010 an extremely flexible business tool that is now relevant to the whole organisation.’
